ABOUT

Welcome to Teaching Without Chairs!

I'm Carla, and I started Teaching Without Chairs to share hands-on teaching ideas for elementary and middle school kids!

I have always been passionate about hands-on learning, both in the classroom and with my own kiddos! The idea that you can learn the most without sitting in a chair at a table is what inspired this blog's name: Teaching Without Chairs. We still do occasional work at a table, but there are soooo many other ways to learn, and that is what I want to share the most on this blog. I also share other awesome homeschooling resources on my Teaching Without Chairs Facebook page, and I would love to connect with you there!

I currently have a teaching license in both Virginia and Texas, and have taught full-time in Texas, Utah, Arizona, and China. I have a BS in Biology Composite Teaching with an emphasis in microbiology and a MA in Geosciences Education. I love science! But I also love history, art, reading, geography, and much more! I especially love to travel, read, try new things, experiment and research, bike ride, rock-climb, and explore new places.

Nine years ago I left the public school classroom and started homeschooling my own kids. We now have five children in PreK - 7th grade. We are eclectic, hands-on, unit-study homeschoolers driven by my kids' interests and passions. Homeschooling provides a wonderful platform to integrate all subjects while learning--a method of education that has actually been proven to be more successful than separating subjects the way traditional schools do. I love trying new curricula and am excited to share my educational background and curriculum-writing experience on this blog!

On this blog, I focus on activities and themes for "older" kids--kids in elementary, middle, or high school. If you're looking for preschool activities, be sure to hop over to my preschool blog: Preschool Powol Packets! It has over 1,000 activities and learning resources for your 2-6 year olds!

I would love to hear from you!! Feel free to send me an email at preschoolpackets@gmail.com or leave a comment on any post. I respond to emails the fastest, but will always do my best to get back to you!
